What is F5 Self IP and Floating Self IP Address?

Self IP Addresses (non-floating)

  • Self IP addresses are configured as traffic-group-local-only.
  • Self IP addresses do not sync.
  • In HA structure, self IP addresses are different for each device.
  • 1 self IP address can be defined for each VLAN.
  • Self IP addresses are used for ConfigSync, failover and mirroring.
  • Servers are monitored via self IP addresses.

Floating Self IP Addresses

  • Floating self IP addresses are configured as traffic-group-x.
  • Floating self IP addresses will sync.
  • In HA structure, floating self IP addresses are common for every device.
  • Multiple floating self IP addresses can be defined for each VLAN.
  • There is no obligation to add a flating IP address for a VLAN with a self IP address. But it should be preferred.
  • A floating self IP address cannot be added for a VLAN without a self IP address.
  • The traffic of virtual servers where SNAT is configured as automap is forwarded to the servers via floating self IP addresses.
